A long time ago - not quite during frontier times, but when my town was little more than a handful of homesteads - there was a really harsh winter. The snow came early, and it stayed much longer than usual. Food supplies ran low, people were forced to burn anything that they could keep dry in order to stay warm, and things were generally bad all round. Then, out of the blue, the sky suddenly cleared and there was three consecutive days of bright sunshine which melted the snow and saved the town.
